Chris Dibben is Professor and Chair in Geography (Health and Environment) at the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences. He directs three major ESRC-funded research centers: The Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (SCADR), the Scottish Longitudinal Studies Centre (SLS), and the Financial Data Service (FINDS). His leadership extends to co-directing Administrative Data Research Scotland and the SafePOD network, facilitating secure access to sensitive data for public benefit research across the UK.
Dibben's research focuses on quantitative health geography, specializing in the analysis of linked administrative datasets to examine patterns of poverty, deprivation, and inequality throughout the life course. His work emphasizes early-life environmental exposures and their long-term health consequences, utilizing innovative methods to understand neighborhood effects on health outcomes.
His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on health inequalities, environmental determinants of health, and methodological innovations in data linkage. Recent work explores UV exposure impacts, COVID-19 disparities, active transportation benefits, air pollution effects across the lifespan, and methodological approaches to measuring multimorbidity. This research consistently applies advanced quantitative techniques including longitudinal analysis, natural experiments, and spatial epidemiology across diverse population datasets.
Dibben leads significant research infrastructure projects including the £3M Financial Data Service and serves as principal investigator for multiple ESRC grants examining social determinants of health through linked administrative data. His work involves collaboration with researchers across Scotland and internationally, though specific student supervisees aren't detailed in available materials.
