Chris Degeling

Assoc. Professor Chris Degeling is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Sciences, University of Wollongong (Australia), and Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney. His work bridges health social science and applied philosophy, focusing on the social and political dimensions of disease prevention, human-animal health interactions, and ethical dimensions of infectious disease control. He holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science (University of Sydney) and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Degeling leads interdisciplinary research on public health ethics, policy, and One Health governance, informing national and international policies. He serves on the One Health High-Level Expert Panel (Quadripartite) and editorial boards for Public Health Ethics and CABI One Health.

His research employs deliberative methods, Delphi techniques, and qualitative inquiry, addressing topics like antibiotic stewardship, pandemic preparedness, and vaccine mandates. Degeling has secured NHMRC, ARC, and MRFF grants, including leadership roles in the APPRISE CRE (infectious disease emergencies) and Wiser Healthcare initiatives. He previously coordinated university courses in bioethics, public health, and science ethics, fostering nationally shared resources in animal welfare education.

His service includes roles in the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (Zoonoses SIG), and advisory bodies for the World Health Organization. Degeling’s work emphasizes stakeholder engagement, particularly with Indigenous communities and marginalized groups, to ensure equitable health policy development.
