Professor Chris Davies is Deputy Dean (Operations) and former Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University's Faculty of Engineering. With over 25 years of academic experience, he specializes in computational materials engineering, focusing on light metals like magnesium and titanium. His research explores texture evolution, deformation mechanisms, and microstructural modeling. Davies holds a PhD from Imperial College London and has led major research initiatives, including ARC-funded projects on light metals and additive manufacturing. Awards include the 2010 TMS Light Metals Division Award for breakthroughs in magnesium alloy deformation studies.
Education: BScEng (Imperial College London), PhD (Imperial College London), Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (Monash University).
Research interests span advanced manufacturing processes, materials characterization via techniques like EBSD and X-ray diffraction, and alloy design for biomedical and engineering applications. Recent work emphasizes additive manufacturing optimization through digital twin frameworks and powder bed fusion modeling. He leads interdisciplinary projects in smart materials and sustainable alloy development.
Key contributions include developing formable magnesium alloys and improving fatigue resistance in light metals. His 230+ publications span materials science, metallurgy, and manufacturing systems. Awards include the TMS Light Metals Division Award for fundamental magnesium research (2010).
Leadership roles include Academic Board President (2016–2019), Interim Dean (2022–2023), and Deputy Dean (External Engagement, 2020–2022). Active in industry collaboration, he bridges academic research with practical applications in aerospace and biomedical sectors.
