Chris Barnard is Professor of Art at Connecticut College, where he joined in 2012 initially as Assistant Professor of Art and now serves as Chair of the Department of Art. He teaches Concepts in Two Dimensions, Drawing Fundamentals, Introduction to Painting, Figurative Painting & Its Politics, and Large Format Painting.
Education:
- M.F.A., University of Southern California (USC)
- B.A., Yale University
Barnard's research interests focus on examining white supremacy's relationship to privileged spaces of art and educational institutions, representation in visual culture, and the connections between painting and social justice issues. His artistic practice explores the politics of painting through representational works that incorporate fictional elements to raise questions about institutional allegiances and priorities. He investigates how painting can engage with concrete social crises related to racism, dehumanization, and injustice, particularly from the perspective of a straight, White man.
Barnard's work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York City, San Diego, Chicago, and New Haven, and can be found in public and private collections nationally and internationally. He is represented by Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven and Luis De Jesus Los Angeles. His artistic practice is significantly influenced by scholarly works including The History of White People by Nell Irvin Painter, Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America's Universities by Craig Steven Wilder, and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.
