Chris Bannerman is Professor in Dance at Middlesex University and founding Director of redLoop, the university's Design and Innovation Centre. His practice and research focus on choreographic processes, intercultural collaboration, and the curation of large-scale international dance projects. He has secured over £8M in research funding including Horizon 2020 support for the CRADL project.
Bannerman's leadership of ArtsCross/Danscross (2009-present) – a collaborative initiative with Beijing Dance Academy and Taipei National University of the Arts – established frameworks for transcultural dialogue through dance. His publications analyze curation as a dialogic practice integrating Eastern philosophy with contemporary performance. Recent work documents choreographic knowledge and festival histories, including Dance Umbrella's 40-year legacy.
Creative outputs include ensemble works exploring collaborative authorship and intercultural improvisation. His research advances critical approaches to performance curation, examining how artistic exchange navigates cultural difference and geopolitical contexts.
