Chris Abani is the Board of Trustees Professor of English at Northwestern University, where he teaches Creative Writing (Fiction and Poetry) and Literature. He is a multifac (novelist, poet, essayist, screenwriter, playwright) with a global impact through his work translated into 13 languages.
- Education: B.A. in English (Imo State University, Nigeria); M.A. in Gender and Culture (Birkbeck College, University of London); M.A. and Ph.D. in English (University of Southern California)
His research spans African Poetics, Postcolonial Theory, and Urban Cultural Dynamics, blending Yoruba/Igbo philosophy with modernist explorations of identity and globalization. His creative work, including the PEN USA Freedom-to-Write Award-winning novel GraceLand, examines intersections of Nigerian tradition and Western cultural influence through lyrical, socially charged narratives.

Abani founded the Black Goat Poetry Series and co-founded the African Poetry Book Fund, which publishes emerging African poets through chapbook box sets. He has taught across three continents in countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Qatar, and the UK, maintaining active creative projects like Smoking the Bible (2022) while mentoring the next generation through literary curation.
