Chong Tow Chong

Prof Chong Tow Chong is a University Professor and Director of Temasek Laboratories at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He previously served as SUTD's President (2018–2024) and founding Provost (2010–2018), driving strategic development and operationalization. Prior to SUTD, he held leadership roles at A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council and the Data Storage Institute for 15 years, alongside a 30-year academic career at National University of Singapore (NUS) as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Education: BEng from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Electrical Engineering), MEng from NUS (Electrical Engineering), and ScD from MIT (Electrical Engineering).

Research focuses on electrical and computer engineering with emphasis on data storage technologies and engineering innovation. He has authored/co-authored over 400 publications, delivered 35+ invited talks, and secured 25 patents. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and applied technology solutions.

• Awards: President’s Science and Technology Medal, Public Administration Medals (Gold/Silver), IEEE/IES Medal, ASME ISPS Leadership Award, and multiple fellowship recognitions.

Leadership spans academia and national research institutions, including steering SUTD’s growth and A*STAR’s strategic direction. Current initiatives at Temasek Laboratories focus on advanced technology research for national and global impact.
