Dr. Chong-Ju Chae serves as Associate Professor in Maritime Safety and Environment Administration at the World Maritime University. With a Ph.D. from Korea Maritime and Ocean University and dual M.Sc. degrees (WMU/KMOU), his 7-year seafaring background as a deck officer informs research on maritime safety technologies, autonomous vessels, and human factors.
Research expertise includes Formal Safety Assessment, maritime accident investigation, MASS technologies, and simulator-based training. Current projects focus on standardization frameworks for autonomous ship operations and remote control systems.
As Chair of IMO's MASS Standardization Committee, Dr. Chae advises on regulatory adaptations for autonomous shipping. He edits the Journal of International Maritime Safety, Environmental Affairs, and Shipping (SEAS) and serves as an STCW compliance evaluator.
