Choman Hardi is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). A scholar, poet, and translator, Dr. Hardi returned to her homeland to teach English and Gender Studies at AUIS after 26 years of living abroad. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kent in Canterbury, an M.A. from University College London, and a B.A. from The Queen's College, University of Oxford.
Dr. Hardi's research and teaching interests encompass a wide range of topics including poetry, feminist literature, feminist literary criticism, gender and genocide, masculinity, symbolic reparation, and women's activism. In 2015, she founded AUIS's Center for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS), which in 2017 established the first interdisciplinary gender studies minor in Iraq.
Her scholarly work has focused extensively on the gendered experiences of the Kurdish Anfal genocide, culminating in her acclaimed book "Gendered Experiences of Genocide: Anfal Survivors in Kurdistan-Iraq" (Routledge, 2011), which was named a UK Core Title by the Yankee Book Peddler. Her research bridges literary studies with gender studies and genocide studies, offering unique insights into women's experiences during and after mass violence.
As a poet, Dr. Hardi's work has appeared in prestigious publications including Poetry London, Poetry Review, Ploughshares, Washington Square Review, Exiled Ink, and Modern Poetry in Translation. Her English poetry collections, published by Bloodaxe Books, include "Life For Us" (2004) and "Considering The Women" (2015). Four poems from her first collection were selected for the UK's English GCSE syllabus in 2010. Her second collection received a Recommendation by the Poetry Book Society and was shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prize for Best Collection. Her translation of Sherko Bekas's "Butterfly Valley" (Arc Publishing, 2018) won a PEN Translates Award.
