Chloe Stewart is a Research Fellow at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London, where she works on spatial patterning of 3D musculoskeletal organ-chips for translational applications. Based in Engineering 147, Mile End, she can be reached at c.stewart@qmul.ac.uk. Her research employs manufacturing techniques to recapitulate complex tissue environments, focusing on spatial heterogeneity and cross-tissue interfaces to enhance physiological relevance in organ-on-a-chip models.
Her academic qualifications are:
- PhD, University of Nottingham: Researched microenvironmental factors regulating macrophage fusion during the foreign body response and synthesized synthetic PEG-polyester copolymers for injectable hydrogels in drug delivery.
- Pharmacy degree: Trained as a Pharmacist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, engaging in clinical-based research.
Dr Stewart's research interests lie at the intersection of Biomedical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, and Biomaterials, with a specialization in Organ-on-a-Chip technology. She also contributes to Drug Delivery Systems, Immunology (particularly macrophage biology), and Computational Biology, as evidenced by her prior work on cardiac fibrosis modeling. Her current projects aim to improve the physiological fidelity of organ-chip models through innovative spatial patterning techniques.
Affiliated with the Centre for Predictive in vitro Models, Dr Stewart collaborates with supervisors Prof Hazel Screen and Prof Martin Knight. Her previous postdoctoral role at the University of Oxford involved developing a predictive computational model of cardiac fibrosis in partnership with mathematicians. Her diverse background in pharmacy, material chemistry, and computational modeling enables a multidisciplinary approach to translational biomedical research.
