Dr. Chloe E. Atreya is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she specializes in gastrointestinal oncology, particularly colorectal cancer. She co-directs the Integrative Oncology Program and Research Hub at the Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center, focusing on tumor genetics and personalized treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes. Her research integrates microbiology, genomics, and clinical oncology to address chemotherapy resistance and toxicity.
Education includes a BA from Princeton University (1998), MD/PhD from Yale School of Medicine (2005), and additional training in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at UC. She has held leadership roles in clinical trials and grants, including NIH R01 and R37 awards targeting microbiome-driven therapy optimization and BRAF-mutant colorectal cancer.
Research interests span gut microbiota's role in chemotherapy efficacy, integrative oncology practices, and patient-centered care. Key contributions include studies on microbial vitamin biosynthesis mitigating drug toxicity and BRAF/EGFR inhibition resistance mechanisms. Awards reflect her clinical and translational excellence, including the 2017 Marcus Program Innovation Award and 2014 Patient Care Commitment Award.
Grants include NIH-funded projects on microbiome-based therapy prediction (R21CA227232) and kinome-guided BRAF/KRAS targeting (R01CA229447). She advises on ASCO integrative oncology guidelines and leads trials evaluating mindfulness interventions and digital health tools for cancer survivors.
Labs/Teams: Active in the UCSF Cancer Center's translational research units, collaborating with microbiologists (e.g., Turnbaugh Lab) and bioengineers to advance precision oncology. Mentors trainees in clinical/translational research through UCSF's residency and fellowship programs.
