Chia Liu

Dr. Chia Liu is an Associate Lecturer and researcher at the University of St Andrews' School of Geography and Sustainable Development, affiliated with the Bell-Edwards Geographic Data Institute and Population and Health Research. Her work focuses on social demography, particularly living arrangements, gender division of labor, family structure, child outcomes, and transnational families, employing quantitative methods across Europe, Latin America, and Asia. She supervises PhD students in topics like geriatric suicide in East Asia and socio-demographic determinants.

Her research explores migration impacts on family dynamics, refugee integration, and gender disparities. Notable projects include analyzing housing integration of refugees in Germany, family trajectories of immigrants across Europe, and mental health in exogamous unions. She contributed to the COVerAGE-DB global pandemic database and studies Ukraine's population post-war.

Dr. Liu's publications span migration, family sociology, and demographic policy. She co-organized events on interdisciplinary menstruation studies and migration research symposia. Her work aligns with UN SDGs addressing gender equality, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities.
