Dr. Cheryl Stuntz is a Professor and Department Chair of the Psychology Department at St. Lawrence University. She holds a PhD in Sport Psychology from the University of Virginia (2005) and a dual BA in Chemistry and Psychology from Bowdoin College. Her research focuses on social influences on motivation and moral development in sport, often involving undergraduate students in collaborative projects. She teaches courses in sport psychology, personality psychology, positive psychology, and first-year seminar programs on lifestyle behaviors and happiness. Dr. Stuntz has served as Faculty Athletics Representative for 16 years and contributed to university initiatives through roles like Faculty Associate for the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership.
Her editorial experience includes serving as Associate Editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and membership on the editorial board of Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Her research spans topics like psychological needs, character strengths, and the impact of sport programs on youth development. She has published extensively on motivational dynamics, coach-athlete relationships, and ethical considerations in sports. Dr. Stuntz’s work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in sport and exercise psychology.
Advising and service contributions include leading Psi Chi (psychology honor society) and contributing to committees such as the First Year Program Council. Her research collaborations with students reflect a commitment to hands-on academic engagement.
