Cheryl Hoffman is an Adjunct Professor in Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Integrative Studies at George Mason University since 2018. She also serves as Deputy Commissioner of the Administration for Children, Youth, and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with prior leadership roles including Director of the Children and Youth Policy Division at HHS and chair of the Interagency Working Group on Youth Programs.

Her research focuses on youth policy, child welfare, mental health systems, and transition-age youth challenges, particularly in rural populations. She completed a NIMH pre-doctoral fellowship on child mental health services and authored studies on homeless youth characteristics, family participation in care systems, and policy barriers for vulnerable populations.
Her publications from 2008–2022 address interagency collaboration frameworks, opioid epidemic impacts on special populations, and systemic obstacles for transition-age youth. These works span disciplines including public policy, mental health, and rural health disparities.
