Dr. Cheryl Fortner-Wood is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Winthrop McNair Scholars Program at Winthrop University. She joined the Department of Psychology in 1998 and holds a Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Studies from Purdue University, along with an M.A. from Western Carolina University and a B.A. from the College of Charleston.

Research Interests: Dr. Fortner-Wood specializes in early child development, attachment theory, adoption policy, and post-baccalaureate achievement. Her expertise has been cited by the S.C. Supreme Court and informs her role as Co-Chair of the National Council on Family Relations' Adoption and Foster Care Focus Group.
Grants & Awards: She secured over $10 million in federal grants (U.S. Dept. of Ed., SAMHSA, NSF) and led the establishment of TRiO programs at Winthrop. Awards include the 2017 Kinard Teaching Award and 2005 Outstanding Advising Award.
Labs/Teams: Director of the Winthrop McNair Scholars Program and the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program, fostering undergraduate research and graduate school preparation.
