Dr. Cheryl D. Miller is a Professor of DEI in Communication Design at Art Center College of Design, Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas–Austin’s School of Design and Creative Technologies, and adjunct professor at Howard University and the University of Connecticut. She is a renowned graphic design activist, author, and founder of Cheryl D. Miller Design, Inc., a social impact design firm. Her work focuses on ending the marginalization of BIPOC designers through advocacy, research, and archival projects.
Education: MS in Communications Design (Pratt Institute), BFA in Graphic Design (Maryland Institute College of Art), Foundation Studies (Rhode Island School of Design), MDiv (Union Theological Seminary), and honorary doctorates from Vermont College of Fine Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, and others.
Research interests include design equity, social justice in the design industry, and preserving the history of Black graphic designers. Her memoir Black Coral: A Daughter’s Apology to her Asian Island Mother (2013) and book Here: Where the Black Designers Are highlight her advocacy. She curated the Cheryl D. Miller Collection at Stanford University, an archive documenting Black designers’ contributions.

Dr. Miller’s legacy includes mentorship through her firm and academic roles, advancing equitable practices in design, and fostering communities for underrepresented designers.
