Cheryl D. Miller is a Distinguished Senior Lecturer in the Design department at the University of Texas at Austin. She is an award-winning designer, author, and theologian known for advocating diversity, equity, and inclusion in the graphic design industry. Her career includes founding Cheryl D. Miller Design Inc., one of the first Black women-owned design firms, which served Fortune 500 clients like BET and Chase.
Education: B.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), M.S. in Communication Design from Pratt Institute, Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, and multiple honorary doctorates from Vermont College of Fine Arts and MICA/Rhode Island School of Design.
Research focuses on Black graphic design history, social impact design, and cultural diversity advocacy. She curates the open-source "History of Black Graphic Design in North America" database with Stanford Libraries. Major awards include the 2021 AIGA Medal and Cooper Hewitt Design Visionary recognition.
Current projects include archiving her personal work at Stanford University Libraries and serving on boards for Vermont College of Fine Arts and MICA's Global Advisory Board.
