Cheryl A. Murphy is a Professor at the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University (MSU), where she serves as Director of the Center for PFAS Research. She is affiliated with the Center for Integrative Toxicology, Center for Water Sciences, Environmental Science and Public Policy program, and Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior Program.
- Ph.D., Louisiana State University (2006)
- M.S., University of Alberta (1998)
- B.S., Dalhousie University (1993)
Dr. Murphy specializes in ecotoxicology and environmental toxicology, focusing on how individual-level physiological changes translate to population-level impacts in fish. Her work bridges reproductive physiology, behavioral ecology, and toxicological modeling to address contaminant effects on aquatic ecosystems. She directs the Center for PFAS Research, developing toxicity assessment frameworks for PFAS mixtures.
Recent research highlights include studies on PFAS contamination, sublethal effects of sea lamprey parasitism, and molecular mechanisms of skipped spawning. She has secured substantial grants from agencies like the US Geological Survey, EPA, and Department of Defense for these initiatives.
Dr. Murphy's collaborative approach integrates laboratory, field, and modeling methodologies to evaluate chemical toxicity impacts on fish populations and communities. Her work significantly contributes to the Adverse Outcome Pathway Framework and environmental policy development.
