Cherubim Quizon is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Department Chairperson at Seton Hall University’s Department of Sociology Anthropology and Criminal Justice. His research focuses on the intersection of material culture, indigenous knowledge systems, and colonial histories, particularly among the Bagobo and B’laan peoples of Mindanao, Philippines. He specializes in abaca ikat textiles, ethnography, and the critique of colonial museum practices.
Education: PhD in Anthropology (SUNY Stony Brook), MA in Art History & Criticism (SUNY Stony Brook), BA in Humanities (University of the Philippines Diliman). His doctoral dissertation analyzed Bagobo group identity through textile practices. He has held Fulbright and other grants for fieldwork.
Research Interests: Radical materiality, ethnobotany in textile production, decolonizing museum studies, and the agency of indigenous peoples in representation. Recent work explores the material systems behind cloth-making, including color symbolism and gendered plant knowledge.
Teaching: Courses include Cultural Anthropology, Qualitative Research Methods, and Southeast Asian Studies. He redesigned the Qualitative Research Methods course with a digital humanities component.
Service: Founding Editor of Locus Journal (Seton Hall), Editorial Board Member of Social Science Diliman, and former Chair of the Philippine Studies Group (AAS). He advocates for multi-site ethnography and collaborates internationally on textile research.
