Chenhao Tan

Chenhao Tan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Data Science at the University of Chicago, directing the Chicago Human+AI Lab (CHAI). He is also a visiting scientist at Abridge. His research focuses on integrating social sciences and machine learning to enhance AI's impact in scientific discovery, healthcare governance, and democratic processes. Key interests include human-AI communication protocols, AI's role in hypothesis generation, and ethical AI systems.

Selected recent work includes synergistic hypothesis generation combining literature and data-driven methods (2024), and studies on machine explanations' human interpretability (2023). He has received a Best Paper Award at ICML 2022 for work on human-compatible AI representations.

CHAI Lab explores applications like decision-focused summarization and scalable oversight mechanisms for powerful AI systems. Openings exist for PhD students in Computer Science and Data Science, as well as postdocs in human-centered AI. Collaborations span industry (Abridge) and academia, with a focus on interdisciplinary solutions for societal challenges.
