Dr. Cheng-i Wei is a Professor and Acting Chair of the Department of Nutrition & Food Science at the University of Maryland. He also serves as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station, and Director of the University of Maryland Extension. His academic leadership roles include previous positions as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Oklahoma State University and Head of the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at Auburn University.
Dr. Wei holds a B.S. in Biology from Tunghai University (Taiwan, 1970), an M.S. in Medical Microbiology from National Taiwan University (1972), and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California, Davis (1979).
His research focuses on food microbiology, safety, toxicology, and immunotoxicology. He has secured over $11 million in external funding and authored over 200 refereed publications.
In his administrative roles, Dr. Wei has led strategic initiatives in agricultural education, research, and extension since 2005. His work bridges academic excellence with practical applications in food science and public health.
