Cheng Lu

Professor Cheng Lu is a faculty member at the University of Wollongong, holding the position of Professor in the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering since 2018. He previously held roles such as Associate Professor (2013–2017), Senior Lecturer (2011–2012), and Research Fellow (2002–2008). His education includes a PhD (1993–1999) and B.E. (1989–1993) from Northeastern University, China.

Research interests include Computational Material Science, Material Processing Technology, Fracture Modelling and Control, and Energy Generation. Key areas of focus are manufacturing processes, numerical modelling, and high-pressure material behavior. Over 500+ publications span topics like superconductivity, structural phase transitions, and pipeline failure analysis.

Grants include major funding from ARC and industry partners, focusing on pipeline integrity, advanced materials, and tribology. Supervision of 30+ PhD/Master’s students covers themes such as hydrogen embrittlement, nanocrystalline metals, and pipeline fracture mechanics. Major facilities include in-situ microscopy and high-pressure testing equipment funded through collaborative grants.
