Chen CUI

Chen CUI is a Research Fellow at the Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca' Foscari University of Venice. He is currently working on the PRIN project "Translating China: Jesuit Linguistic-Cultural Mediation" under the supervision of Prof. Tiziana Lippiello, contributing to interdisciplinary research in medieval and early modern cross-cultural encounters.

Research Interests: Chen's work bridges medieval studies, translation theory, and digital humanities. His research focuses on three interconnected domains: (1) medieval European travel writing, especially Anglo-Germanic traditions, analyzed through intellectual history and environmental humanities; (2) the cultural and linguistic mediation of Nestorian, Franciscan, and Jesuit travelers in Asia from the Middle Ages to the early modern period; and (3) innovative digital and neurocognitive methodologies such as digital scholarly editing, digital mapping, kinesic analysis, and semantic investigation of medieval narratives.

Chen has been a visiting scholar at numerous institutions including Boston College, the University of Iceland, the Newberry Library, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Birkbeck College, and King's College London. In 2024, he served as a Landhaus Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center in Munich, working as an eco-medievalist under Prof. Christof Mauch.

Advising and Grants: As a postdoctoral fellow on a nationally funded PRIN project, Chen is engaged in high-level collaborative research.
