Chelsea Wenzhu Xu is a doctoral candidate in Cultural Studies at George Mason University (GMU), where she teaches courses such as Global Affairs and Culture and Globalization. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from China and a Master’s in English Literature from the University of Rochester. Her research focuses on visual culture, feminist theory, and neoliberalism in China, with an emphasis on how media and popular culture reflect gender roles, nationalism, and social hierarchies.
Her work has been published in venues like the East Asian Journal of Popular Culture and New Critique, exploring topics such as the intersection of beauty standards, class, and race in China, and the representation of maternal roles in contemporary Chinese television. Xu has also presented at conferences including the Association for Asian Studies and the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association (SWPACA).
Her academic contributions highlight the socio-cultural dimensions of Chinese identity, blending feminist theory with postcolonial critique to analyze media and societal norms.
