Cheehyung Harrison Kim is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, specializing in modern East Asia and North Korea. His research focuses on labor history, urbanism, socialism, and everyday life, particularly in North Korea. He holds a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin (1998) and a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2010).
His work examines industrialization, worker experiences, and socialist ideologies, with notable publications including Heroes and Toilers (2018) and translated works like Dawn of Labor (2024). He has received awards such as the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship and serves as Editor of Korean Studies and Book Series Editor for “Hawai‘i Studies on Korea.”
Kim’s research bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, addressing themes of transnational industrialism, urban development, and the intersection of material culture with political systems. His recent articles explore Pyongyang’s architectural legacy, North Korean industrial cities, and the ideological underpinnings of state policies.
