Chase Wesley Raymond

Chase Wesley Raymond is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine. He is a core faculty member in the interdepartmental Program in Culture, Language, and Social Practice (CLASP). Previously, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Raymond holds dual PhDs in Hispanic Linguistics (2014) and Sociology (2016) from UCLA.

His research bridges Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics, focusing on language use in mundane and institutional settings. He examines how interactants co-construct meaning through interaction, particularly in contexts of linguistic and cultural contact, with an emphasis on Latinx communities and Spanish-speaking experiences in the U.S. His work spans disciplinary boundaries, appearing in journals like Language, Research on Language and Social Interaction, and Patient Education and Counseling.

Raymond’s recent publications address topics such as apology structures in Mandarin, open data practices in CA, and multilingualism in healthcare interactions. He actively contributes to methodological debates in conversation analysis and leads projects like the Corpus of Language Discrimination in Interaction (CLDI). His teaching integrates theoretical rigor with applied contexts, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to language and society.

He currently serves as Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the Linguistics Department and oversees the CLDI initiative. His research interests also extend to institutional discourse, language policy, and the role of grammar in social action.
