Chase Hobbs-Morgan

Chase Hobbs-Morgan is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (2017). His research focuses on democratic theory and environmental political thought, particularly exploring how democratic institutions can address climate change through ethical and structural transformations. His work critiques dominant climate discourses and examines climate activism, including the use of necessity defenses in legal contexts.

He teaches courses such as Introduction to Political Philosophy, Political Concepts: Democratic Theory, and Political Concepts: Environmental Theory. His current projects include a book manuscript critiquing antidemocratic tendencies in climate discourse and a forthcoming article analyzing climate disobedience movements. Hobbs-Morgan’s interdisciplinary approach bridges political philosophy, environmental studies, and critical theory.
