Dr Charmian Mansell is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Sheffield. She holds a BA (Birmingham), MA (Birmingham), and PhD (Exeter). Her research focuses on gender, labor, and mobility in early modern England, using legal records to recover everyday experiences. She is the author of Female Servants in Early Modern England (Oxford UP, 2024), which challenges traditional narratives of service labor. Currently, she leads a project on everyday travel and communities funded by the British Academy.
She has held fellowships at the University of Cambridge, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Huntington Library. Her work has been published in Gender and History, Continuity and Change, and The Historical Journal. Mansell also serves as a series editor for the 'Women on the Move' book series (Manchester UP) and reviews historical literature for The Economic History Review.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on early modern Europe and postgraduate seminars on historical methodologies. She actively supervises students researching social and economic history of England (1500–1750).
