Professor Charlotte Warren-Gash is a Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Health Data Science in the Department of Non-communicable Disease Epidemiology within the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). She is also an honorary consultant in Public Health Medicine with extensive experience in using large health datasets to investigate causes of disease in older age to inform prevention strategies.
Her educational background includes a PhD from UCL (2013), an MSc in Epidemiology from LSHTM (2007), an MBChB (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh (2003), and a BSc (Hons) in Experimental Pathology from the University of Edinburgh (2000). She trained in internal medicine in Edinburgh and London hospitals before specializing in public health.
Professor Warren-Gash's research focuses on understanding causes of disease in older age with particular emphasis on how infections interact with other health conditions. She leads a program funded by a Wellcome Career Development Award investigating relationships between infections and key components of brain health (mental health, cognitive health, and sensorimotor function) in older age. She also leads a large collaborative project funded by Open Philanthropy to enhance the UK Biobank dataset with additional infectious disease data. Her other research interests include social and environmental influences on health, health inequalities, vaccine epidemiology, and phenotyping methods.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of infections, aging, and non-communicable diseases. Her work spans epidemiological methods including self-controlled case series, time-series analysis, systematic reviews, and risk prediction modeling. She has made significant contributions to understanding how infections impact cardiovascular health, neurological conditions, and cognitive function in aging populations across diverse global settings.
Her scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Wellcome Career Development Award (2023-2030)
- Wellcome Intermediate Clinical Fellowship
- MRC-funded PhD
- NIHR clinical lecturer position
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
- Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health
Professor Warren-Gash serves as an Educational Supervisor for the UK Faculty of Public Health training scheme and is Deputy Chair of the exam board for the professional certificate in pharmacoepidemiology & pharmacovigilance. She teaches on various MSc modules including Extended Epidemiology, Study Design, and Advanced Research Methods, as well as short courses including Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis. She supervises MSc summer projects and PhD students with a particular interest in brain health projects.
She leads the Brain Health Group at LSHTM, which focuses on investigating relationships between infections and brain health across different populations using large longitudinal datasets and robust causal inference methods. Her group's work aims to generate new insights that can inform interventions to improve brain health worldwide.
