Charlotte Reinhard Bjørnvad

Charlotte Reinhard Bjørnvad is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds dual appointments in the Section for Internal Medicine, Oncology and Clinical Pathology, and the Section for Diagnostic Imaging & Companion Animal Surgery and Clinical Specialties. With DVM, PhD, and Dipl. ECVCN credentials, she is a leading researcher in companion animal metabolic disorders with an extensive publication record of 150 research outputs.

Professor Bjørnvad's primary research interests focus on obesity and its consequences in dogs and cats, metabolic syndrome in cats, diabetes in dogs and cats, gastrointestinal diseases, and clinical nutrition. Her work bridges veterinary and human medicine through comparative approaches, particularly using feline obesity and diabetes as spontaneous animal models for human type 2 diabetes. She leads multiple research initiatives including the University of Copenhagen Research Centre for Control of Antibiotic resistance (UC-CARE) and collaborative projects with Royal Canin and other industry partners.

Her recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued productivity across multiple areas including feline diabetes management, canine enteropathy, pancreatic disorders in cats, biotics in animal nutrition, and antimicrobial treatment efficacy. These works reflect her integrative approach combining clinical practice, laboratory research, and translational applications for both veterinary and human health.

Professor Bjørnvad actively supervises PhD students and teaches across multiple programs including the Bachelor and Master in Veterinary Medicine, Master in Companion Animal Clinical Sciences, and specialized courses for veterinary nurses. She serves as a consultant for pet food companies (Royal Canin, Dechra, Blücare, Novozymes, Boehringer Ingelheim) and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for FEDIAF, maintaining strong connections between academic research and industry applications.
