Charlotte Oskam is an Associate Professor at Murdoch University's School of Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences within the College of Environmental and Life Sciences. As head of the CrypTick Laboratory, she leads internationally recognized research on vector- and water-borne diseases, focusing on ticks, pathogens, and their hosts. Her work integrates advanced diagnostic techniques like next-generation sequencing and environmental DNA analysis.
Education:
- Doctor of Philosophy (Biological Sciences), Murdoch University (2008–2013)
- Master of Science (Forensic Sciences), University of Otago (2005–2007)
- Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Human Reproduction and Development), University of Otago (2002–2004)
Her research program examines vertebrate hosts, ticks, and pathogens to identify early disease biomarkers. Key areas include tick microbiome analysis, One Health approaches to pandemic management, and emerging zoonotic diseases. She has secured grants for projects like the 'Troublesome Ticks' study and collaborates with industry and government to address biosecurity challenges.
Awards:
- Young Tall Poppy Award (2022)
- Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research (2015)
She supervises PhD, veterinary masters (DVM), and honours students, fostering interdisciplinary teams. Her lab also explores molecular diagnostics and systems biology applications for disease control.
