Charlotte Johansson is a Research Fellow with MACRO – the Centre for Macroalgal Resources & Biotechnology at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. She works within the Biomass Scale Up subprogram of the Macroalgal Biofuels and Bioproducts project, which addresses aquatic waste streams from diverse industries including aquaculture, agriculture, and municipal waste.
Her research focuses on identifying biosorbents from algae for the bioremediation of metals and metalloids, and developing preparation techniques for industry implementation. Charlotte's work aims to optimize macroalgal biomass production and bioremediation at commercially relevant scales, with the overarching goal of providing cost-effective environmental solutions while establishing sustainable and viable macroalgal biomass production platforms.
Charlotte contributes to James Cook University's strong research profile in marine and environmental sciences, building on the institution's legacy as host of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies from 2005 to 2022.
