Charlotte Johann is a Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London’s School of History, holding a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. Her research bridges intellectual, legal, and political history, focusing on how legal frameworks shaped political practices in 19th-century Europe. She specializes in Germany’s legal evolution during its ‘stateless’ period (1806–1871) and the transnational implications of legal thought.
Before joining Queen Mary, Johann completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge and was a Research Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. Her current projects include a monograph on Savigny, Germany, and international legal order, and a Leverhulme-funded study on corporate rights in Britain and Germany (1870–1920), examining corporate personhood’s role in democratic practices.
Her research publications explore themes like Prussian sovereignty legacies, legal culture in post-Napoleonic Germany, and the historiography of law. She has contributed to journals like The Historical Journal and Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte, as well as edited volumes on political thought.
