Charlotte Illsley serves as a Lecturer in Integrated Dental Science at the Peninsula Dental School within the Faculty of Health at the University of Plymouth. She holds critical leadership roles including Year 2 BDS Programme Co-lead, Fitness to Practise Lead, and Professionalism Lead for the dental school.
Her educational foundation includes a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences, followed by doctoral research commencing in 2017 under Dr. Bing Hu's Stem Cell and Cancer Biology group.
Dr. Illsley's research program operates at the intersection of molecular mechanisms and clinical dentistry, with dual emphases: (1) epidermal stratification/differentiation pathways in skin cancer initiation and progression for novel therapeutic development, and (2) hormonal fluctuation impacts on women's oral health during pregnancy, cancer treatment, and menopause. Her work directly addresses gender disparities in dental research by targeting root causes rather than symptom management.
She delivers specialized instruction in physiology and molecular biology for Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Dental Therapy & Hygiene (BDTH) programs, with pedagogical expertise spanning stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine applications in dentistry.
Dr. Illsley's institutional trajectory demonstrates progressive responsibility: Research Associate in Stem Cell and Cancer Biology (2017-2021), Research Fellow (2021-2022), and current Lecturer appointment (2022-present). Her academic tutoring for year 2 BDS students integrates professional standards development with clinical education, reinforced through her leadership in fitness-to-practise oversight.
Her laboratory investigations continue within the Peninsula Dental School framework, building upon foundational work in Dr. Hu's Stem Cell and Cancer Biology research environment to advance translational dental science.
