Dr. Charlotte Hammer serves as an Everitt Butterfield Research Fellow in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Cambridge Public Health, University of Cambridge. Her academic work focuses on the epidemiology of emerging and high consequence infectious diseases, with specialized attention to risk factor identification, surveillance system development, and outbreak response mechanisms in challenging environments.
Dr. Hammer earned her PhD from the Health Protection Research Unit for Emergency Preparedness and Response under Professor Paul Hunter's supervision, researching outbreak risks in humanitarian emergencies. Prior to her current fellowship, she worked as an epidemiologist with the European Field Epidemiology Training Program, contributing to major outbreak responses including the COVID-19 pandemic across the European Union and Papua New Guinea, as well as the Ebola outbreak in North-Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Her research interests center on two critical areas: the early detection and prevention of spillover-borne outbreaks of emerging zoonotic diseases, and identifying risk factors for infectious disease outbreaks in complex and fragile settings such as humanitarian emergencies and peri-urban informal settlements. Her work integrates One Health approaches to understand disease transmission at the human-animal-environment interface.
Dr. Hammer's publication history demonstrates significant expertise across multiple domains of infectious disease epidemiology. Her recent research shows a strong emphasis on innovative surveillance methodologies including wastewater-based monitoring and digital epidemiology approaches. She has conducted extensive research on outbreak dynamics in vulnerable populations, particularly examining transmission patterns in long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and refugee populations during humanitarian emergencies. Her systematic reviews have provided valuable evidence syntheses on infection prevention and control practices across various settings.
Through her involvement in multiple international public health emergency responses, Dr. Hammer brings practical field experience to her academic work, effectively bridging theoretical epidemiological models with practical implementation in challenging field conditions. Her research consistently addresses critical gaps in understanding how crises create conditions for infectious disease spread and how to effectively monitor and respond to these threats.
