Charlotte Goudge

Charlotte Goudge is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Brandeis University. Her research focuses on historical archaeology in the Caribbean and North America, examining colonialism, capitalism, and environmental impacts through material culture analysis.

Research Interests: Dr. Goudge investigates colonial entanglements through island and maritime networks, specializing in economic systems, social change, and environmental legacies of European colonialism. Her work integrates postcolonial theory to analyze how colonial enterprises established enduring financial, social, and ecological disruptions in Caribbean communities. She examines subsistence patterns, industrial pollution from sugar/rum production, and cross-cultural interactions at contact-era sites.

Advising and Grants: Recognized for graduate mentorship through her 2022 GSAS Dean's Award nomination, Dr. Goudge has secured funding for major field projects including the decade-long Dig Hatteras Archaeological Project and the interdisciplinary Still House Project. These grants supported collaborations with environmental scientists, faunal specialists, and health researchers to analyze colonial impacts.

Labs and Teams: Dr. Goudge leads collaborative teams integrating archaeological fieldwork with environmental analysis, notably assembling multidisciplinary groups for the Still House Project that included soil researchers, medical anthropologists, and historical ecologists to study plantation legacies.
