Professor Charlotte Colman is a distinguished faculty member at Ghent University's Faculty of Law and Criminology, Department of Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies. With over a decade of academic contributions, she has established herself as a leading expert in drug policy, criminology, and the intersection of substance abuse and criminal justice systems. Her work bridges academic research with practical policy implementation, particularly regarding drug treatment courts and alternative sentencing approaches.
Her research interests focus on desistance from crime, addiction and recovery processes, drug markets (particularly synthetic drugs), organized crime, gender studies in crime contexts, and prison studies. Professor Colman's work demonstrates a consistent focus on understanding the pathways into and out of criminal behavior, with special attention to drug-related offenses and gender dynamics within criminal networks.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on synthetic drug markets, with particular attention to women's roles in these markets, financial flows within criminal organizations, and strategies for disrupting organized drug trafficking. Her research employs diverse methodologies including narrative analysis, crime scripting, and mixed-method evaluations of drug policy interventions.
Professor Colman has supervised doctoral students including Eva Blomme (promoted 2023) and Minqi Zhao (promoted 2019), indicating her active role in mentoring the next generation of criminology researchers. Her extensive collaboration network includes Freya Vander Laenen (28 co-authored works), Brice De Ruyver (17), and Sophia De Seranno (14), reflecting strong institutional partnerships within Ghent University's criminology research community.
