Charlotte (Charlie) Burns is Professor of Politics in the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield. An expert on EU and UK environmental policy, she specializes in analyzing environmental resilience, Brexit impacts, and the role of the European Parliament. She served as Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations (2022-2024) and directs the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership.
Her research examines factors shaping environmental policy resilience during external challenges, particularly focusing on Brexit implications for UK/EU environmental governance. Current projects investigate agricultural policy reform, chemical regulation divergence, and climate governance patterns. Professor Burns sits on editorial boards of the Journal of European Public Policy and Environmental Politics, and chairs the ESRC Advisory Group on Post Doctoral Fellowship development training.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates sustained focus on Brexit-environment intersections, climate governance complexities, and EU policy evolution. Recent articles analyze post-Brexit regulatory divergence in agriculture and chemicals, climate strategy implementation challenges, and illegal wildlife trade networks.
