Dr. Charles-Édouard de Suremain is a full-time researcher at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) and a member of the Research Unit 208 PaLoc (Local Heritages & Governance), affiliated with the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the Université François Rabelais in Tours, France (1994). His research focuses on cultural anthropology, development issues, and food heritage. Key areas of study include ethnic stereotypes in Guatemalan coffee plantations (1985–1994), colonization dynamics in Ecuador (1989–1991), child health in Congo, Bolivia, and Peru (1995–2003), and food insecurity in Africa and Mexico. Currently, he leads the FoodHerit project (with Raúl Matta) examining food heritage within Latin American development initiatives, encompassing Mexico, Central America, and the Andean region.
