Charles (Ben) Watson is the Chair Associate Professor of Classics and Joseph F. Paxton Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma’s Department of Classics and Letters. He specializes in classical philology, focusing on Cicero, ancient rhetoric, Roman law, numismatics, and epigraphy. Prior to OU, he held roles at Oriel College, St Hilda’s College (Oxford), and as Visiting Assistant Professor at Lawrence University.
Education: B.A. in Classical Languages and Literature from Harvard University; M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Oxford, same field.
Research interests include Cicero’s forensic works, Roman legal texts, and recent expansions into coin iconography and inscriptions. His publications include a forthcoming commentary on Cicero’s Divinatio in Caecilium (Cambridge, 2022) and articles like Rheinisches Museum (2018) and Hermes (2019). Current projects address strategic ambiguity in rhetoric and temporal perception in legal narratives.
