Charles Super is a Professor in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) and Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut, and Co-Director of the Connecticut Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (CHHD). His research focuses on understanding cultural influences on child development across diverse global contexts, including Africa, Europe, Korea, China, Bangladesh, and India. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to study parental ethnotheories, cultural regulation of development, and interventions for children's and families' well-being.
Key research areas include cultural sleep practices, parental perceptions of newborn behavior, and cross-cultural parenting strategies. Collaborations with Connecticut's Office of Early Childhood and the National Family Development Credential program highlight his applied focus. Current projects involve analyzing findings from the International Study of Parents, Children, and Schools, and the International Baby Study, alongside long-term research among the Kipsigis of Kenya.
His work bridges theoretical and applied domains, addressing global developmental science challenges and advocating for culturally competent policies and interventions. He has published extensively on topics ranging from cultural models of child development to resilience in marginalized populations.
