Charles Stewart III is the Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1985. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and serves as the MIT director of the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project. Stewart founded the MIT Election Data and Science Lab in 2017 and co-founded the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project in 2020.
His research spans American politics, congressional politics, elections, and American political development. Stewart is an established leader in election systems analysis and quantitative assessment of election performance. Key areas include historical development of congressional committees, origins of partisan polarization, Senate elections, and election administration metrics. Stewart has received significant research funding from Pew Charitable Trusts, Democracy Fund, Hewlett Foundation, and Joyce Foundation for his election performance research. At MIT, he served as Head of House of McCormick Hall from 1992 to 2015 and has been recognized for outstanding undergraduate teaching.
