Charles Robert Dove serves as a Professor in the Department of Animal and Dairy Science at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. His academic appointment began as Assistant Professor in October 1988, advancing to Associate Professor in July 1995, and reaching his current Professor position in July 2024. Dr. Dove maintains his office at the Rhodes Animal Science Center on the Athens campus.
- B.S. from University of Missouri-Columbia
- M.S. from University of Missouri-Columbia
- Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from Iowa State University
Dr. Dove's research program primarily focuses on the interaction between dietary nutrients, vitamins, and trace minerals in swine nutrition. His work extensively examines alternative feed ingredients and nutritional quality measurements. While he has no extension appointment, he remains highly active in youth swine programs and teaches the graduate minerals class. His research spans multiple critical areas including mineral metabolism, swine growth performance, and nutritional interventions for improved animal health.
Analysis of Dr. Dove's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on swine nutrition with particular emphasis on trace minerals, especially manganese, selenium, and iodine. His work bridges basic nutritional science with practical applications in swine production systems. The research demonstrates strong methodological rigor with increasing incorporation of microbiome analysis in more recent studies, reflecting evolving trends in animal nutrition science.
Scientific Awards:
- Student Career Success Influencer Award (2024)
Dr. Dove has secured substantial research funding from various sources including Zinpro Corporation, Georgia Pork Producers, and USDA NIFA. His grant portfolio demonstrates a strong industry-academic partnership with numerous unrestricted gifts supporting swine research, particularly focused on mineral nutrition. He has mentored undergraduate researchers through CAES programs including Young Scholar research projects and CURO (Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities) initiatives. His research program appears well-funded with ongoing projects extending through 2026, including the USDA NIFA project 'Utilizing Dietary Nicotinamide Riboside Supplementation as a Countermeasure to Muscle Fatigue.'
Dr. Dove maintains strong collaborative networks within the animal science community, working with researchers across multiple institutions as evidenced by his multistate research projects. His work on sow locomotion and claw trimming represents an important contribution to swine welfare research.
