Dr. Charles Nicaise is an Assistant Professor at the University of Namur's Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Sciences, teaching General and Organ Histology. He leads the LNR - Laboratoire Neurodégénérescence et Régénération, a member of URPhyM Research Unit and NARILIS. His work bridges neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and sustainable healthcare education.
- 2013: Post-doctoral fellowship, CMMI, Erasme Hospital
- 2011: Post-doctoral fellowship, Thomas Jefferson University
- 2010: PhD, Université Libre de Bruxelles
- 2002: MSc in Biomedical Sciences, Université Libre de Bruxelles
Research focuses on glial cells and glutamate transporters in CNS disorders, including:
- Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (ODS)
- Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD)
- iPS/Neural Stem Cell Biology
- Cell Therapy and Small Animal Neurosurgery
His recent work spans neurodegenerative disease modeling, Long COVID pathogenesis, and SARS-CoV-2 effects on neuronal structures. Key projects include 3D-brain organoids for viral studies, phrenic motor neuron regeneration, and sustainable development integration in biomedical curricula. Notable contributions examine cystine/glutamate antiporter mechanisms in SCI recovery and aquaporin dynamics in autoimmune nephritis.
- Post-doctoral fellowship (CMMI, Erasme Hospital)
- Post-doctoral fellowship (Thomas Jefferson University)
Dr. Nicaise serves as Co-director of PFT Morph-IM (since 2017) and participates in editorial/reviewer roles for major research councils. He manages the Histology Platform and contributes to the Belgian Long COVID Research Network.
