Charles Meneveau is the Louis M. Sardella Professor in Mechanical Engineering and associate director of the Institute for Data-Intensive Science and Engineering (IDIES) at Johns Hopkins University. He holds joint appointments in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Environmental Health Engineering. His research focuses on turbulence modeling, large eddy simulation (LES), and wind energy systems. Meneveau leads the Johns Hopkins Turbulence Databases (JHTDB), a public resource providing access to massive turbulence datasets.
Education: BS from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (1985); MS (1985), MPhil (1987), and PhD (1989) from Yale University. His postdoctoral work at Stanford University’s Center for Turbulence Research pioneered wavelet analysis in turbulence.
Research interests include multiscale turbulence dynamics, LES subgrid-scale modeling, wind farm fluid dynamics, and environmental transport. Key contributions include the Lagrangian dynamic model for LES, which expanded applicability to complex geometries. His work on vertical entrainment in wind farms enhances turbine efficiency and renewable energy potential.
Awards: Member of the National Academy of Engineering (2014). Over 250 peer-reviewed papers have used JHTDB data, demonstrating its global impact.
Current roles: Deputy editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, director of JHTDB, and collaborator on projects funded by NSF, DOE, and DARPA. His team addresses offshore wind energy challenges through computational and experimental methods.
