Associate Professor Charles Marley is an academic at the University of Adelaide, serving as Academic Lead of Learning and Teaching in the School of Allied Health Science and Practice, part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He oversees learning/teaching quality and inter-professional learning across Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, and Physiotherapy. Previously at the University of Edinburgh, he taught and researched child mental health, including the MSc Mental Health of Children and Young People. He maintains professional registration as a psychologist in the UK (HCPC) and Australia (AHPRA) and is a certified supervisor on the British Psychological Society’s Register.
His research combines critical theory (Foucault, Rose, Bacchi, Biehl) with ethnography to examine cultural, political, and economic influences on mental health practices. Key areas include global mental health, research ethics, and the WHO mhGAP approach. He advocates for contextually informed interventions and has conducted studies in diverse settings like Malawi and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Grants include £50k (2019) and £94k (2020) for projects on rural mental health partnerships and ethics in global research. Supervision focuses on Masters/PhD candidates in allied health and education-related disciplines. His work emphasizes ethical research conduct in complex international collaborations.
Labs/Teams: Leads inter-professional learning initiatives and collaborates on global health research projects. Active in the British Psychological Society (2021–2022 membership).
