Charles M. Pepiton is a Professor of Theatre & Dance at Gonzaga University, where he has taught since 2014. He holds an M.F.A. in Directing from the University of Idaho and a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Wayland University. His academic work bridges theatre education and interdisciplinary artistic production, emphasizing cross-cultural collaboration and new work development. Pepiton serves as Producing Artistic Director of Square Top Theatre, focusing on innovative projects like Laura, or Scenes from a Common World (2016) and Without Them I Am Lost (2023).
His research interests include devising performance, documentary film, and the intersection of theatre with environmental and philosophical discourse. Notable works include Romeo ∞ Juliet (2019), a reimagined Shakespeare adaptation, and Coming Home: A Soldiers’ Project (2018), a documentary theatre piece exploring veteran experiences. He has directed over 20 productions at Gonzaga and Square Top Theatre, with a focus on site-specific and immersive formats.
Pepiton’s international collaborations include Peace Corps service in China (2010–2012), where he directed cross-cultural theatre projects at Guizhou University. His films have screened at AVIFF Cannes, Cinema on the Bayou, and the National Nordic Museum, earning awards including the Special Jury Prize for Without Them I Am Lost. He actively engages in community arts through programs like Uncharted (partnership with the Spokane Symphony) and Gonzaga’s ZagLab initiative.
