Charles Lockwood serves as Resident Dean of Adams House and Assistant Dean of Harvard College, alongside his role as Lecturer in the Study of Religion at Harvard Divinity School. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Yale University and a Ph.D. in the Study of Religion from Harvard University.
His research focuses on modern religious thought, religious ethics, and the philosophy of religion, particularly analyzing how rationality debates in 18th-19th century German thinkers (Kant, Hegel, Marx) shape contemporary discussions about religion, secularization, and modernity. His current book project explores Kant’s concept of autonomy in relation to secularization debates.
He has taught courses on modern philosophy of religion, secularization theories, religion in public life, and Christian ethics, as well as comparative courses on Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
Prior roles include six years as Resident Tutor in Adams House, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies for Religion, and directing the senior thesis program. He also taught at Oberlin College and held a research fellowship at Australian Catholic University’s Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry.
