Dr. Charles Hughes is an Associate Professor of History and Urban Studies at Rhodes College. His research intersects popular culture, African American music, and disability history in the United States, with a focus on genre evolution and racial dynamics.

Dr. Hughes is renowned for his work on African American music’s role in historical change, including his acclaimed book Country Soul: Making Music and Making Race in the American South (2015) and the critical biography Why Bushwick Bill Matters (2021). His current projects examine African Americans in professional wrestling and disability in popular music.
His publications span topics like race and genre politics (2018), the recording industry (2017), and disability narratives (2016). He is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame voter and co-founder of the digital music newsletter No Fences Review, bridging academic and public discourse through platforms like the Teaching Hard History podcast.
