Charles Gunnels is a Professor and Department Chair of Biological Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Florida, an M.S. from Utah State University, and a B.A. from Skidmore College. His research focuses on urban wildlife ecology, animal behavior, and the integration of undergraduate research in education. He leads FGCU's efforts to use campus conservation areas as living laboratories, emphasizing community sustainability and student engagement. Dr. Gunnels has received awards including the 2021 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Excellence Award and the 2020-21 Faculty Mentor Excellence Award. He chairs the Department of Biological Sciences, overseeing 35 faculty/staff and 900+ undergraduate majors while developing a new master’s program. His professional memberships include the Animal Behavior Society and Raptor Research Foundation.
Research interests span urban wildlife interactions, historical zoology, and improving student learning through research initiatives. Key projects include studies on gopher tortoises, rattlesnakes, and Florida burrowing owls in urban environments. He also directs study abroad programs in the Caribbean and South America, blending ecological fieldwork with cultural immersion. His work emphasizes bridging ecological conservation and community education through campus-based initiatives.
